The competition is open to amateur (NON-PROFESSIONAL) photographers only. By amateur in this instance, we mean somebody that earns less than 10% of their earnings from photography and does not hold a recognized photography qualification at a degree level or higher.
Competition is open to any person that fits the eligibility requirements over the age of 16 in the following categories: age 16-18 Category and age 19 or Over Category.
Employees or current students of UCW ‘University Centre Weston’ (This does not include Weston College students studying for a level 3 qualification), Employees of Weston College, Judges immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such individuals, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win a prize.
Any persons that do not abide by the eligibility requirements will be disqualified from the competition.
- HOW TO ENTER:
To enter visit http://ucwphotocompetition.co.uk/enter. Complete the form and follow the online instructions to upload photographs from your computer, pick your age category
Digital images should have a long dimension of at least 1500 pixels and be saved at 72 dpi no larger than 2mb. Please ensure you have access to a high-resolution file of at least 5000 pixels at 300 dpi. Anyone that does not have access to a higher resolution file if requested by the judges will be disqualified from the competition. The person submitting the Entry must be the creator of the Entry and will be deemed the “Entrant.” You can only use one (1) email address to enter. Normal internet/phone access and data/usage charges imposed by your phone/internet service provider may apply.
You may enter up to 3 photographs; Entry is free of charge. We encourage suggested donations or £1 per submission which will go towards funding our current UCW photography students end or year exhibition, However, this is entirely voluntary.
No refund of donations will be issued in the event of the entrant’s submission being disqualified. Nor will donating give the entrant an advantage in ANY way.
Each Entry must be unique.
Each Entry consists of an entry form; a single image.
Each submitted photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the Entrant. By entering the Contest, Entrant represents, acknowledges and warrants that he or she has full power and authority to enter the photograph and that the photograph does not infringe any copyright or violate any other intellectual property rights. The Entrant agrees to indemnify from any and all third party claims arising from the use of the photograph as provided below in “Third Party Releases/Licenses.”
If the photograph includes people, where possible we would advise a model release form to be obtained for all models in the photograph; however, we understand that in instances such as street photography this is not always practical. In this case the entrant agrees to take full liability and responsibility for the publication of the photograph and any disputes that may arise due to the publication of the photograph. Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud, provided that Entrants must be prepared to provide a release form. When photographing the artworks belonging to other, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame portrait of the artwork.
The Entries will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below. The photograph must not contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Photographs deemed inappropriate will be disqualified.
All Entries must adhere to the Entry Guidelines indicated below, as determined by Sponsor/Judges in their sole discretion.
- ENTRY GUIDELINES:
Entry must not (and Entrants represent and warrant that it will not), violate or infringe any third-party copyright, trademark, trade dress, or other proprietary rights of any entity or person (living or deceased), including but not limited to rights of privacy, publicity or portrayal in a false light.
Entry must not make reference to any commercial advertising, including but not limited to corporate logos, brand names, slogans as determined in the Judge’s sole discretion.
Any Entry deemed inappropriate or unsuitable, at Judge’s sole discretion, will be disqualified.
By submitting an Entry, you understand that if your Entry is deemed to be a winner, it will be posted and distributed in various media online and in print. The winners work will also be displayed at the UCW photography Exhibition held at The Island in Bristol 27/04/20 – 03/05/20
There are two rounds of judging:
Round One, a panel of 5 current UCW photography Students (with the support of two UCW photography lecturers) (the “Judges”) will each review the Entries in each Category (and determine a select amount of Entries, minimum 10 per age category) to proceed to Round Two.
Entries will be downloaded from the website by an administrator and Judges will judge each photograph without knowing the details of the entrant apart from which category the photograph is entered in and the description of the photograph.
Round Two, the select Entries in each category will be re-judged by the industry professional Judges to determine the Winner per category and the runner-up per category.
All decisions of the Judges are final and not subject to appeal.
Winner of each age category: £100 cash and your work printed up to the value of £50 to be displayed at the UCW end of year exhibition at ‘The Island’ Bristol 27/04/20 – 03/05/20

- WINNER NOTIFICATION AND VERIFICATION:
Potential winners will be contacted via phone/email provided at time of Entry and will then be required to complete and return via email, a Declaration of Eligibility form, a high-resolution file of the image (to be sent back via wetransfer.com) and where required a request for the model or artwork release will be requested.
- GENERAL RULES:
By participating in the Contest, Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Judges. Judges’ decisions are final on all matters relating to the Contest and are not subject to appeal
In no event will more than the stated number of prizes be awarded. All Entries will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at the time of Entry. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address.
UCW photo competition is not responsible for technical, hardware or software malfunctions or failures of any kind, including any injury or damage to any person’s computer related to or resulting from participating in or experiencing any materials in connection with the Contest, lost, late stolen, misdirected, damaged, incomplete and/or garbled Entries, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incorrect, incomplete, inaccurate, garbled or delayed electronic communications caused by the user or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest or by any human error which may occur in the Contest. UCW photo competition is not liable in the event your Entry is not captured due to the above reasons. The Judges reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual that tampers or attempts to tamper with the Entry process or the operation of the Contest; violates the Official Rules; or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the Judges which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Contest or the website, Judges reserves the right to cancel the Contest and determine the winners based on the Judging Criteria in accordance with these Official Rules.
- THIRD PARTY RELEASES/LICENSES:
By entering the Contest, each Entrant understands that they retain their copyright. Winners authorize UCW photo competition to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the photograph Entry in connection with Contest.
UCW photo competition reserves the right to use all/any photos for publicity purposes
- DATA COLLECTION/PRIVACY:
UCW photo competition collects personal information from Entrants at the point of entry to the Contest for use in the administration of the Contest. We may on occasion use the entrant’s photograph for competition promotional purposes or to announce the winner, in which instance the entrant’s name, age, hometown and description will accompany entrants photograph. You may object to such use by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org this will not affect your entry in any way.

The categories of entrant information that we collect, hold and share include:
Personal Information (PI) – such as name, age, address, telephone number, and email.
We use the data to contact the entrant on the event of the entrant becoming shortlisted for a prize.
We collect and use information under the following lawful basis; Contract and Public Task (GDPR Article 6a and 6e)
The personal information that the entrant provides us is mandatory in order to enter the competition. In order to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation, we will inform entrants whether they have a choice in providing their personal information.
Entrant data will be held for until September 2020. Data of the winners and runners-up may be kept for an undefined period.
Entrant details are for internal competition contacting purposes only and will NEVER be passed onto any third party.
